What’s the difference between API Q1 and API Q2 management standard certifications?

There is some confusion as to which of the API Management Standards, that companies should be assess to.

In the past it was simple, since API Q1 covered both Manufacturing and Service Organisations. However the Q1 (8th Edition) requirements were strongly oriented to Manufacturing. This was especially, when assessment was linked to a technical API Specification. Therefore few Service organisation applied and achieved Q1 certification.

Now there is a choice between
• Q2 1st Edition – Specification for Quality Management System Requirements for Service Supply Organizations for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries
• Q1 9th Edition (issued June 2013 – effective June 2014) – Specification for Quality Management System Requirements for Manufacturing Organizations for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry

What are the differences?
• Q1 – aimed at Manufacturing Organisations especially if complying with an API technical Specification. If complying to Q1 and an API Specification, then the organisation can apply the API Monogram to the relvant products.
• Q2 – aimed at Service Supply Organisations which provide equipment and services with the Service responsibility remains with the Supplier. An example would be the rental or hire of drilling equipment. However it can also be used for Service Organisations

Now there is a choice but which Standard to choose is not necessarily straight forward

We recently had interesting discussions concerning a Group Head Office, which was providing Project Management as well as Designs for manufacturing locations. The initial preference was not clear and there were justifications for either QI or Q2 certification. However after more detailed investigation, the recommendation was clear.
